History

Cornell's development in the late 1990s and 2000s was a deliberate departure from conventional suburban planning — drawing on New Urbanist principles championed by architects and planners who wanted to recreate the walkable, community-centred character of pre-war Ontario towns. The neighbourhood's proximity to the Rouge Valley, one of the most ecologically significant natural areas in the GTA, shaped its layout and gave it an environmental identity unlike anywhere else in Markham.
