History

Observatory takes its name from the David Dunlap Observatory, built in 1935 by the University of Toronto and operated for decades as a leading astronomical research facility. The 74-inch telescope — the largest in Canada at the time — drew scientists from around the world and gave this corner of Richmond Hill a global identity. When the university sold the property in 2008, the community fought successfully to preserve the heritage buildings and surrounding green space, ensuring the observatory remains the living centrepiece of this remarkable neighbourhood.
